Hello
there! I'm here at this very beautiful mission San Juan Capistrano. It was
actually founded twice. Once by Father Fermin Lasuen, and once by me, Father
Junipero Serra. When I was looking for a place to found this mission, I was looking for good land and a
great water supply. This was the 7th mission. I founded it on November 1, 1777. I
named it for Saint John of Capistrano, Italy. It's nickname is "Jewel of the
Missions." It is located in the community of San Juan Capistrano on Interstate 5,
just west of Highway 101, and north of San Diego and San Luis Rey. I see four bells that
hang low. Every building was made out of adobe except for the "Great Stone
Church", which was destroyed in the 1812 earthquake. I can see many bushes, trees,
flowers, and other plants. Among all the people here, you will feel at home here. I
can hear the bells playing "God Bless America", and the birds chirping in the
fresh air. Maybe on March 19, every year, you can come with me when I welcome the swallows
home from their long winter. Why don't you join me on my journey to the next mission? |
